Minnesota Legislature: Gene Pelowski

Few politicians have served with such distinction. In a House full of relatively inexperienced members, a leader like Pelowski shines through as a legislator and a classroom teacher. Pelowski’s wisdom and common sense not only reflect well on Winona, but also pay dividends for the entire state. Let’s face it, Pelowski has done many things that have even drawn a few wary looks from his own party — but, he’s been absolutely right.

He’s pushed for reform at the Capitol. He’s pushed for more transparency in government — so that even his high school students could see what elected officials are doing. He’s pushed for accountability in higher education; he’s advocated for more money for classrooms. And, he’s been one of the few politicians willing to speak the truth about the dire condition of our state economy.

In this time of politicking and spin, Pelowski’s honesty is a refreshing voice. And, his leadership is exactly what we need once the Legislature convenes to tackle what could be a horrible budget problem.
