STATE REPRESENTATIVE PELOWSKI FILES FOR
REELECTION TO MINNESOTA HOUSE
State Representative Gene Pelowski officially filed for reelection to the Minnesota House of Representatives today. Pelowski, who has served in the legislature since 1986, filed at the
Minnesota Secretary of State's office in St. Paul. After filing, Pelowsk laid out some of the major issues on the horizon for the state in the upcoming 2003 Legislative Session. "I would be honored to serve another term in the
Minnesota House representing the people of Southeastern Minnesota." Pelowski said. "With the uncertain economic situation in Minnesota, it's clear that the 2003 Legislative Session is going to be an important one.
"The major issues facing legislators will be maintaining the state's fiscal stability as well as our quality of life in key areas like health care, transportation and lifelong education. Above all, our fundamental challenge
will be solving a likely budget deficit without seriously detracting from the quality of life issues that make our area and our state so exceptional." Pelowski noted some of his major accomplishments from the 2002 Legislative
Session. "I am pleased to have served on both the Internet Privacy Conference Committee and the Graduation Rule and Profile of Learning Conference Committee. The Internet Privacy Conference Committee drafted Minnesota's
innovative new law that provides consumers with extensive new privacy guarantees. Minnesota is now the first state in the nation to pass legislation requiring Internet Service Providers to ask customers whether they would like
their personal information kept private. As a member of the Profile of Learning Conference Committee, I advocated for the abolishment of the Profile, but in the end the conference committee could not reach agreement and the Profile
survived for another year." Pelowski has also served as Chair of the Rules Reform Task Force, a special commission designed to study ways to shrink our government while at the same time making it more responsive to the needs
of Minnesota taxpayers. The Task Force has issued a report recommending increased accountability for state agencies, improved citizen participation and eased regulatory burdens on business and industry. This year,
Pelowski was the chief sponsor of legislation funding Winona State University's new science building and the science labs for Minnesota State College Southeast Technical campus. Pelowski also noted that a particular pleasure from
the past year was being spotlighted on a Japanese television program focusing on the uses of technology in American government. The "Friday Forum" program is a Japanese public affairs program As a past chair of the House
Select Committee on Technology, Pelowski is an avid technology user and the legislature's leading advocate for improving technology resources. In addition to the Higher Education Finance Committee, he serves on the Education Policy
and Regulated Industries and the Redistricting Committees |
